Strafford spoils senior night at Hollister with 2-1 win

Hollister, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Strafford controlled the tempo of the first and third sets to defeat Hollister on senior night, 25-19, 20-25 and 25-18.

“The girls played a high level of volleyball tonight,” Strafford coach Adeana Brewer said. “Hollister is a good team, so I was really pleased when we stepped up our play to come back and win the third set.”

In the first set the Lady Indians (22-6) took and early 14-7 lead. Strafford continued their dominance with a 5-point run to extend their lead 19-9.  A kill by Amanda Rowden and Emily Oberbeck and an ace by Hannah Collins gave Strafford game point.

Hollister (17-8-4) rallied five points with a kill and an ace by Hannah Smith to cut the lead 24-19. The next play the Lady Tigers hit a ball into the net to end it.

In the second set the Lady Indians and Hollister stayed close in alternating scoring. The teams tied four times before Hollister took control. The Lady Tigers biggest lead was 18-13 and then 20-15.

Strafford missed a serve to make it game point for Hollister, but the Lady Tigers then missed their next serve. Hollister’s Shelby Ballard ended the set with a kill.

The Lady Tigers took the serve for the third match while Strafford moved back to the side they had won on in the first set.

“Strafford passed well and they hit well tonight,” Hollister coach Barry Wheeler said. “I thought we had something going in that second set, but I think we lost momentum when we chose to serve instead of side in that third game.”

Both teams worked hard for every point in the third set trying to get an early lead. Strafford took a two-point lead several times, but Hollister tied the score three times before the Lady Indians started to break away.

Brewer said, “I have a floor full of five seniors that really contribute. I really feel that my whole senior group stepped up in using this game to prepare us for districts next week.”
Strafford had a four-point run to put them ahead 10-6. The intensity increased as the game quickly moved forward. The Lady Tigers would not be able to catch back up even though Strafford did not get more than a four point lead until the end of the game.

Smith hit two kills to make the score 18-22. A missed serve by Hollister gave the Lady Indians their biggest lead of the game 23-18. A kill by Strafford’s Rowden and an ace by Collins finished the game.

Hollister plays Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Buffalo before starting districts Monday, Oct. 22 at Aurora. Strafford also plays Tuesday, Oct. 16 at home for senior night against Fordland. They then head to Sparta for districts on Monday, Oct. 22.
