Crusaders trounce Graceland



Lamoni, Iowa (Evangel Sports Information)  -- Evangel improved to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the Heart of America conference with a 35-14 win at Graceland Saturday.
 
The Crusaders built a 21-7 lead in the first quarter. Evangel scored early on a 26 yard fumble return by Lamar Allen then broke a 7-7 tie on a 49 yard run by quarterback Andrew Brimhall. The Crusaders capped the quarter with a 1 yard scoring run by Tommy Meyer with 1:49 left in the first period.
 
Graceland pulled within seven points with 4:59 remaining in the third quarter on a 13 yard touchdown pass from Matt Fink to Raysean Brown.
 
Evangel responded less than a minute later as Otis Brown broke free for a 69 yard scoring run. The Crusaders tacked on another score early in the fourth on a 31 yard TD pass from Brimhall to Mitch McHenry.
 
Graceland outgained the Crusaders in total yards on the afternoon collecting 426 yards to Evangels 421 total yards.
 
RB Andrew Gayles led the Yellowjackets rushing for 195 yards on 31 carries.
 
Otis Brown had 97 rushing yards for Evangel on six carries while WR Jesse Vaughn had five receptions for 94 yards. Stephen Swillum led the defense with 11 tackles.
 
The win snapped Evangel’s four game losing streak at Graceland giving them their first win in Lamoni since 2001.
 
The Crusaders are at home next Saturday for their Homecoming game against Peru State. Kickoff is at 1:30 p.m. at JFK Stadium.
