Cassville, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com) -- It was senior night for the softball team in Cassville tonight, but it didn’t take long for the visiting Pierce City Lady Eagles to make the night their own. Pierce City pushed a run across in the first inning, then added two more in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to grab an impressive 7-1 non-conference win on the road.
The Lady Eagles got out quickly when Bailee Hayward reached base on an error, stole second, moved over to third on a single by Faith Strong, and came home on a long sacrifice fly from pitcher McKenzie Moreland. They would threaten again in the second as two Pierce City runners would reach base. But Cassville catcher Madison Jamison would end that threat by throwing out the Eagles Brooke Ridenour as she attempted to steal third.
The Pierce City offense got going again in the third as Hayward would reach base again with a single. A wild pitch would send her to second, she would move to third on a fielder’s choice, then make it 2-0 when centerfielder Emily Ashley drove her home with a single. Ashley would later come home on a single by Moreland who picked up her second RBI of the game to make it 3-0.
Cassville would get a run back in the bottom of the inning as an error by the Pierce City defense would allow Lady Wildcat Kelsey Baker to scamper home to cut the deficit to 3-1. But that would be all Cassville would get on the night as Moreland was in control the whole evening. Only one Cassville runner would reach second base in the final four innings as Moreland would finish the evening scattering 6 hits, striking out 4, and allowing no earned runs.
Meanwhile the Pierce City offense would leave no doubt as they responded with 2 runs in the fourth and 2 in the fifth to put it out of reach. Moreland would finish 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple and 2 RBIs. While Hayward finished 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored.
Pierce City coach Kacy Gunnels was encouraged by her team’s performance. “We’ve kind of been in a slump the last couple of games. But they hit the ball well tonight, so I think their confidence is building back up.” said coach Gunnels.
For Cassville, sophomore centerfielder Raeghan Blisard went 3 for 4 to lead the offense. With left fielder Katelyn Pitts going 2 for 3. But those two accounted for 5 of Cassville’s 6 hits on the night.
