Smith's 6 TDs lead Comets past Stockton

Stockton, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Behind a six-touchdown performance by junior running back Seth Smith, the Marionville Comets defeated the Stockton Tigers 44-21 in Mid-Lakes Conference football at Joe Price Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

“I thought we played really well at times,” said Marionville coach Bill Voorhis.  “I felt like as a whole our kids played really hard.

Smith carried the ball 34 times for 241 yards and 6 touchdowns, adding a 28-yard TD pass from junior quarterback Ryan White for good measure late in the first half.

“Seth does that every game,” Voorhis said.  “And tonight he got an opportunity to really explode and run out.”

Smith gave plenty of credit to his offensive line for his success.

“I can’t do anything without my line, without my blockers,” said Smith.  “I mean without them, I’d be nothing. The holes just opened up and I just took advantage of what I could get.”

The highlight of the night came in somewhat bizarre fashion midway through the quarter.  At the Comet 37-yard line, Smith appeared to have been tackled for no gain, but he rolled on the back of the Stockton defender and never put his knee down.  He popped back on his feet and kept going 63 yards to paydirt.

“I really didn’t know for sure (if I had been tackled),” Smith recalled.  “I didn’t hear a whistle, so I just kept on going.  I didn’t know if my knee hit the ground or hit the guy, but I felt my knee touch something, but I heard no whistle so I just kept going.”

Stockton was led by senior Kai Brown, who rushed for 144 yards on 15 carries, including a 55-yard touchdown late in the second quarter.

“Stockton’s intensity level at the beginning kind of shocked us,” Voorhis admitted.  “I don’t know if we ever really got adjusted to it.”

The Comets improve to 2-4 on the season, 1-3 in the Mid-Lakes.  They host Fair Grove next week.

The Tigers fell to 0-6 and 0-5.  They visit district rival Butler next week.

For Tigers rookie coach Shad Edwards, it’s back to the drawing board—again.

“We’ve just got to watch some film,” said Edwards.  “We’ll sit down and watch it tonight and tomorrow, all weekend, and put together a game plan.”
