Byrley, Caruthers among winners at Nixa meet

Nixa, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Amidst a cool breeze, runners from teams representing 27 local schools competed in four varsity races at the Nixa Cross Country Invitational Tuesday afternoon.

Nixa, running on its home course, took first in the boys Division I race. It was Parkview’s star, Cameron Byrley, however, who outran the rest, placing first with an individual time of 16.05.10.

Byrley, who did not break out of the pack until the second lap, was not interested in letting the other runners determine the way he ran in the race. He said he had raced against most of Tuesday’s competiton before, and while he enjoys the competition, cross country is more about personal bests.

“I usually don’t like going out with those crazy guys at first, mostly they go to fast for me, so I just stay away from them and run my race,” said Byrley. “[The runners] from Ozark and Republic are good competitors and I enjoyed racing them.”

Despite Cameron’s good showing, the Parkview team, with a total time of 1:25.42.92 was beat out by both Nixa (first place overall Division I, 1:24.45.26) and Carthage (second place overall Division I, 1:25.42.68).

Nixa coach, Lance Brumley, was happy just to be at home where his team could relax, but he was even happier to have the win.

“We’re pretty fired up about [winning]. The goal was always to do well at our home meet,” Brumley said.

Brigette Caruthers placed first for Branson in the Division I girls race followed by her long-time rival, Bailey Hession of Willard, in second place. Ozark, though, had the fastest team overall, followed by Branson and Nixa.

“Coach wanted us to go out hard… [but] it’s definitely about endurance,” Caruthers said. “I think we are going to do all right tonight, we’ve got good runners.”

Hession, said about Bridgette, “(the plan) was to stay up with her. We’ve raced since about 7th grade, and she usually comes out on top.”

Lamar High School took first place overall in the boys Division II race followed by Sparta and Ava. Individually, Crane’s Thomas Chabrecek won the race. Chabrecek beat a rival from College Heights, Ryan Beaver, who placed second.

Springfield Catholic won the girls Division II race, with Lamar in second and College Heights in third. Catholic's Kelly Devlin crusied to victory in the race in a time of 19:36. Lamar freshman Kaelyn Sturgell was a minute back in second place.
