Clever baseball rolls by Sparta behind Wolfe

Clever, Mo. (Ozarks Sports Zone)  -- Clever was dominant in its 17-0 victory over Sparta.  The Blue Jays improved to 6-0 with the win.

Chance Wolfe took the mound for the Blue Jays and produced five solid innings of work, giving up only four hits and striking out eight.

“Whenever you have confidence in your fielders it makes it a lot easier to throw strikes,” said Wolfe.

Wolfe improved to 3-0 with the victory.

Sparta’s offense looked good out of the gate with Kelby Humble and Dylan Hatch getting back-to-back hits in the top of the first.  However, no other Trojans would be able to reach base until the fourth inning when Hatch picked up his second hit of the game and Jake Shipman followed it up with a double to left-center field.

Dylan Hatch started on the mound for Sparta. Hatch had given Clever problems when he faced the Blue Jays last season. However, he experienced location issues early on in this start, resulting in walking five batters in the first inning.

Clever capitalized on these early mistakes to generate 13 runs in the first two innings. Coach Justin Snider uses this as an example of how his team has improved since last season.

“We just had an offensive explosion…everyone from 1 spot to 9 spot is capable of hitting a line drive.”, said Snider.

The pitching staff is doing its part too by only giving up five runs total over the first six games.

They are returning nine seniors from last year’s final four team, seven of them were starters.

“Our seniors are really doing a good job at leading by example,” explained Snider.

Clever has a big conference game coming up on Tuesday, Sept. 11 when the Blue Jays host Forsyth. Each team has a few games to play between now and that date, but it is a game both teams have circled on the calendar.
