Lebanon rolls over Waynesville to remain unbeaten

The Lebanon Yellowjackets and Waynesville Tigers entered the second week of the season as the only two undefeated teams in the six-team Class 5, District 4 that includes Camdenton, Washington, Rolla, and Sedalia Smith-Cotton.  And after a 40-7 trouncing of Waynesville on Friday night, Lebanon reigns as the only unbeaten left.

Waynesville didn't help its own cause with an early fumble near midfield, as Lebanon capitalized with a 1o-yard touchdown run by Elza Evans for a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.  It was downhill  from there for the Tigers.

Lebanon's superior offensive line was in evidence all night.  With a front line that ranges from 270-315 pounds, the Jackets are impressive up front and it resulted in a number of long runs including a 51 yard jaunt by Brock West on Lebanon's next possession for yet another touchdown. West, who ran for over 1,500 yards last season, ran for 216 yards on just 17 carries against Waynesville.  He played for just a half, and tallied four touchdowns.

Still in the first quarter, Evans also broke loose for a long run covering over 40 yards, moving Lebanon inside the Waynesvile 10 and setting up another West score.  Evans finished the night with 14 carries for 136 yards and a touchdown.

The Yellowjackets added two second quarter touchdowns for a 33-0 lead by the half and played conservatively in the second half with a lot of non-starters in the game.  By the end of their 40-7 domination, they'd run-up 416 yards rushing and none passing with their offensive line getting plenty of praise from head coach Will Christian.  "We've kind of become known as Line U," he said.  "We've been blessed to have a lot of great offensive linemen come through here.  And I think if they continue to play as well as they have, we'll have a good year."

Runningback Brock West admitted that he and his teammates were motivated by their home opener taking place on their brand new synthetic turf.  "We didn't want to embarrass ourselves," he remarked.  And with one of the pre-season district favorites, Camdenton, looming next week on the road, the Yellowjackets will get a big opportunity to show just how strong they really are this season.  But so far, so good.
