Tailgating is serious business in Fair Grove

FAIR GROVE, Mo. – The KSPR Game of the Week Friday will feature the Fair Grove Eagles hosting the Skyline Tigers.  In Fair Grove the tailgate is just as important to win as the game.

“Nobody else tailgates like we do at Fair Grove,” said Matt Crutcher, Fair Grove agriculture teacher.

Fair Grove student Gerad Ray raves about the tailgating experience. “I haven't ever seen a tailgate party like this,” said Ray, Future Farmers of America Fair Grove President. “I've been to some NFL games and I haven't seen anything like this.”

The biggest tailgate tradition actually started out of tragedy.  A storm in 2009 damaged much of the high school and destroyed the football stadium.  The debris left after the storm has become the center piece of Fair Grove tailgating.

“We had our football stadium wrecked, we had bleacher seats that were going to be thrown away,” said Amy Bass, Fair Grove student.  “And we used those bleacher seats in our tailgate machine.”

On Friday nights big groups of students and fans gather around a grill on a trailer built from storm debris by Future Farmers of America students.

“I was there when they started drawing up the plans, said Bass. “Walking into Mr. Crutcher's room seeing a monstrosity drawn on the board and your thinking what is that? and little and little they build and we end up with this.”

Building the super sized grill isn’t stopping anytime soon.  Each year seniors make their mark.  Last year a basketball goal was added and more features are to come.

“We've had ideas such as a disco ball to be added to it, portable sound system, removable canopy that can go up and down,” said Crutcher.  “The best one would be the hydraulic pump where everything would operate like a big transformer.”

Students begin tailgating around the grill about 3 hours before kickoff of home football games.
