Star power fuels Waynesville in 2012

Springfield, MO (Ozarks Sports Zone)  -- The Waynesville Tigers are looking to build on a 2011 season that saw them advance to the playoffs, despite lose four games by 10 points or less. Coach Rick Vernon’s squad is hoping that last season’s disappointments will lead to success in 2012.

Head Coach – Rick Vernon, 32nd season

2011 Record- 5-6 (Lost to Holt in Sectionals)

Returning Starters:  11 (5 offense, 6 defense)

Players to watch – Dylan Newcomb (QB/DB), Aren Martin (WR/DB), Josh Rocker (TE/DL)

2012 Outlook

Offense: Waynesville should have no trouble scoring points this season. The Tigers bring back five on the offensive side of the ball including standout wide receiver Aren Martin. Waynesville may struggle out of the gate as last year’s leading receiver Dylan Newcomb transitions to the quarter back position. Expect to see some high-scoring Ozark Conference affairs involving Vernon’s Tigers.

Defense: The biggest question mark for Waynesville coming into 2012 is the defense. Last year Waynesville gave up 31 points per game, only West Plains and Joplin allowed opponents to score more per game. The Tigers return six starters defensively, including all-state defensive back Dylan Newcomb. Coach Vernon is also looking forward to the return of standout defensive lineman Josh Rocker, who missed much of 2011 with a broken ankle.

Odds and Ends: Waynesville may have the most star power of any team in the area. Both Martin and Newcomb have garnered attention from FCS and FBS schools alike. Their explosiveness and size make them a big play threat on either side of the ball. Don’t expect to see them come off the field much this season.

The success of the Waynesville Tigers in 2012 will ultimately hinge on their ability to stop opposing offenses. The Tigers have the talent to once again be at the top of the Ozark Conference and compete for a district championship; it is just a matter of not committing costly errors in crucial moments. Look for Coach Vernon’s squad to be well over .500 this season.
