Strong lines lead Springfield Catholic into 2012

Springfield, Mo. (OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Catholic Fighting Irish won 9 games in 2011 before losing to eventual state champion Rogersville in the second round of the Class 3 playoffs.  To match last year’s success the Irish have to find a way to replace 7 starters on offense and defense.

2011 RECORD – (9-3), Lost in the 2nd round of the Class 3 playoffs to eventual state champion Rogersville.

PLAYERS TO WATCH – Nick Nuseaunar (DE), Cameron Skornia (RB), Ian Hall (OL), Nick Perryman (OL, DL)

Bobby Cornelison has seen his share of good times as the head coach of the Irish.  He knows for it to be a good season in 2012 his offensive and defensive lines will have to play up to potential. The Irish return 6 linemen with playing experience.

“We’ve got a lot of kids returning up front and they’re going to be our strength,” said Cornelison. “Hopefully those guys can get the job done until some of those inexperienced backs roll into playing time. “

The lines may be experienced, but Cornelison will be depending on underclassmen to step up in the skill positions.

“We’ve got some freshman and sophomore guys who I would rather them get another year of J.V. under their belt, but some of those guys are going to have to step in and play varsity football this year,” said Cornelison.

The Irish quarterback position is up for grabs.  Eric Smith and Nick Baron are competing in preseason practice to become the Catholic starter.

Even with some inexperience, Cornelison has built a program at Catholic around players who expect to excel.

“We’ve had a few years when our talent has been down, but our mindset is always we expect to win and compete,” said Cornelison.  “We want that ultimate prize at the end of the year and that’s our goal.”

The Irish open the season August 24t at East Newton.
