Lady Pirate golfers all familiar with the sport

Branson, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Two major players for the Branson’s women’s golf team graduated after last season.

Gabby Zander won two tournaments for the Lady Pirates and Ashley Rand won the Central Ozark Conference Tournament and went to the state tournament for the second year in a row.

Coach Tim Long said the returning team may be young, but they all have some experience.

“This is the first year I’m not working with someone who has never played before. Everyone has some experience, so hopefully they can develop into better golfers much quicker,” he said.

Junior Ashley Wilkerson will return to the team along with five sophomores that played last year. Junior Madi Arnold will be back after spending a year in Europe where she did not play golf. Ali Stone, a senior, is returning after a season ending surgery last season.

None of the returning players have won any award, but Long hopes to change that this season with a few goals for the team.

“We want everyone to improve their scores from last year. We are preparing to win the Central Ozark Conference and to send several of the girls to the sectional tournament,” he said.

Alexandra Farris, a freshman newcomer, will add experience to the team.

“She looks to have the desire to become a great golfer,” Long said. “She has been working with a pro and already has good practice habits.”

Last season, with the help of the two seniors that graduated, the Lady Pirates set a new team record. Last season’s junior varsity team also did well by winning a tournament. One of the freshman players placed first in that tournament.

Long hopes to add to the team’s success from last season by having the players improve their individual and team scores.

“I’m very excited to be coaching the nine girls that I have,” Long said. “All have experience and are dedicated to becoming better golfers for the future. The next couple of years are going to be exciting.”
