Springfield, Mo. (KSPR)  -- The Drury basketball Panthers have signed Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College guard Colby Carr to an NCAA letter-of-intent for the 2012-13 season.

Carr, a New Orleans native who began his career at NCAA Division I Lousiana-Monroe, is a 6-foot-4 guard who will have two seasons of eligibility with the Panthers.

Carr led Coffeyville's Ravens in assists with 136 last season, averaging 9.5 points as a sophomore on a very balanced CCC team that finished 28-4, won the Jayhawk East Conference for a second straight year and has had three players sign with NCAA Division I teams and another two - in addition to Carr - with D-II programs.

"Colby is a playmaker who helps guys around him and can make baskets himself," Drury coach Steve Hesser said. "We think he's going to be a good fit for us. We have all of our players coming back next season, and we wanted someone like Colby to come in and make his teammates better."

Ravens coach Jay Herkelman said Carr received several D-I "looks", but that ultimately "Colby wanted a program that really wanted him."

"Coach Hesser's style is similar to mine, so it will be a smooth transition for Colby," Herkelman says. "He's a tough player. He always guarded the opponent's best perimeter player. He's big and strong and rebounds well. He did a lot of things that don't always show up in the stats."
