Wolfe breaks state record in Clever's loss on the road

Purdy, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Trailing 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning, Purdy’s Brent Cornman’s double with the bases loaded drove in three runs and lifted the Eagles to a 6-4 win in a rain shortened affair. Clever’s Chance Wolfe broke the state record for hits in a single season (58) despite the Blue Jays’ loss.

Wolfe went 3-for-3 on the night, giving the Blue Jays the lead in the third inning with a three-run homerun to left center.  He added to their lead in the next inning as he doubled home Braydn Daniel for a 4-0 lead.  The hit would give Wolfe a big milestone, as it was his 58th hit of the year, a new Missouri state record.

Wolfe was equally dominating on the mound, striking out seven of the first 10 batters he faced, while yielding only one hit through three innings.

But the wheels came off in the bottom of the fourth, as Purdy’s Cameron Terry, Alex Mareth, and Robby Moody each singled with Mareth and Moody picking up RBIs to cut the lead to 4-2.  A base on balls would load the bases, and another walk brought in Mareth to make it 4-3 with the bases loaded and no outs.

Wolfe would recover, striking out the next batter, but Cornman, Purdy’s No. 9 hitter, would strike the game's big blow after drilling a double over the right fielder's head to bring everyone home.

Purdy head coach Josh Hughes wasn’t surprised with the clutch hitting performance of Cornman.

“He’s struggled offensively, but I’ve seen that potential,” said Hughes. “Confidence wise, that’s huge for him.”

Clever threatened in the top of the fifth getting runners on first and second with one out, but Hughes called for a successful pickoff play at first that claimed the second out, then Daniel grounded out for the third.

That would be the last half-inning of play, as the monsoon hit in the bottom of the fifth forcing the umpire to call the game with Purdy ahead, 6-4.

“This is was a very crucial victory for us,” said Hughes. “If we can beat Chance Wolfe, probably the best pitcher we’ve seen all year, then we can beat anyone in our district.”

Purdy is next scheduled to face-off Saturday at Crane in the Class 2 - District 12 tournament against Galena.  Clever will meet the winner of Blue Eye and Southwest in the semifinals of Class 3 - District 11 play at Clever on Monday.
