The Lady Jays’ coach, Paul Lewis, attributes their 0-4 record to lack of experience.
The Lady Tigers’ Jessie Stoll and Dylan Owens scored the only two goals of the first half, both of which were assisted by Macie Cotter.
Marshfield and Willard shared the trouble of handling the ball on the sloppy wet field. Players from each team, and even a referee found themselves suddenly lying in the grass more than once.
“In the first half, we played pretty sloppy in terms of our formation and our shape,” said Lady Tigers Coach Brad Hornback. “We have to give Marshfield credit; I thought they did a good job in the first half. We knew it wasn’t going to be an easy win.”
After Dylan Owens’ solo goal in the 42nd minute, Mary Hannah Miller scored back-to-back goals, both assisted by Makenna Cotter, in the 46th and 50th minute. The Lady Tigers held possession of the ball through majority of the second half, intercepting nearly every attempt by the Lady Jays to move past midfield.
“Once they started holding their shape in the second half, then the goals started coming,” said Hornback. “That’s just good soccer, play your position, not just run a free-for-all.”
Dylan Owens assisted Regan Textor with the Lady Tigers’ 6th goal in the 57th minute, followed by two goals by Lindsay Owens. Owens hit the net in the 67th minute, assisted by Dylan Owens, and Lindsay Owens scored the 8th goal of the game two minutes later, unassisted.
Makenna Cotter posted the Lady Tigers’ 9th and final goal in the 76th minute, unassisted.
Hornback plans to maintain their second-half attitude in future games.
“We’ve got to approach each game with the same mentality in terms of playing with discipline, holding our form, and taking care of each play in that regard,” said Hornback.
