Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com) -- The Webb City Cardinals won the COC Swimming and Diving Championship on Tuesday night. The meet was dominated by the Cardinals as they had top-3 finishers in 10 of the 12 events.
The divers started the meet off, and Webb City’s Hayden Hickman won with a score of 344.80. With his win, Webb City was off and running.
When asked if he was surprised by his team’s dominance in the meet, Webb City head coach Shawn Klosterman said, “I didn’t expect this. I thought Carthage, if they swam well, was going to be tough. They had more people who could score here. We have some good swimmers but not as many as they do. I thought Carthage had the advantage, but we always get free points from diving because they don’t have diving. Also, our breast stroke really helped us score points since we had four in the top six finishers.”
The Webb City 200 yard Medley Relay started the swimming portion of the meet with a new meet record (1:45.94), beating the old record by almost a second.
“I’d say that was the swim of the night. The boys set a COC record, a team record, and for three of the four boys on the relay it’s their first time ever qualifying for state. This was a very big night for them. With that being the very first swim of the night, it set the tone for the rest of the meet,” said Klosterman.
Some other notable performances of the night were Ethan Evans of Rogersville who qualified for state with a time of 58.34 in the 100 yard backstroke. Colter Peck of Ozark swam a state-qualifying time in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:04.65).
