Vikings shake off slow start, hammer Zizzers

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Parkview Vikings suffered their first loss of the season against Hillcrest last week, but they are back on track toward the most wins in school history after handing West Plains a 47-7 defeat on homecoming Friday night.

“We were 3-7 last season, and so for us to be 7-1 right now is really a big difference for us,” said Parkview coach Anthony Hays.  “The biggest difference this year is that our kids think they are going to win and they play like it.”

West Plains had the only touchdown in the first quarter as quarterback Jacob Mitchel scored after leading his team meticulously down the field with a series of short passes, and for someone who didn’t know better, it would have been hard to tell which team was 6-1 and which team was 0-7 at the start.

Parkview, though, led by their star running back Cole Jenkins, put a 40-point spread on the scoreboard by the end of the game without allowing another Zizzers touchdown.

“The biggest thing is really playing every snap as hard as you can. You know, most games only come down to a few snaps here or there that make most of the difference so you’ve just got to play them all hard,” said Hays when asked about the change in pace after the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, Parkview got it together and scored its first touchdown with quarterback Landon Ruff leading the team down the field with a few running plays and then pushing past the Zizzers’ line to score the touchdown himself.

From there on, Parkview dominated play. The Vikings scored 21 points in the third quarter. Late in the third quarter, Jenkins scored on a 75-yard touchdown run to make it 47-7.

“It feels really good, you know, to show that we still got it.  [Hillcrest] didn’t take our hearts away; we just had a bad game,” said Jenkins. “It feels good to get another win under our belts.”

Parkview will be on the road at Lebanon next week.  The two teams have identical records so far this season, each only losing to Hillcrest. Meanwhile, West Plains will be at home to face Rolla.
