Seniors Cole Jenkins and Landon Ruff combined for 338 yards of offense as the Vikings shrugged off an early Willard lead and then sustained a two-touchdown margin for most of the game.
Willard scored first on a 14-play, 81-yard scoring drive capped by a Z Barr 9-yard touchdown rush. The junior tailback would total 114 yards of rushing and 42 yards of receiving by the time he left the game after being hit hard on an incomplete pass from Justin Atchison.
“I was trying to stretch [the run] out, and cut up field but no, that wasn’t gonna work. Then I saw the line flow and saw this big hole and banged it right through there,” Jenkins said.
Parkview entered the night 1-2 in its last three games after a 7-0 start.
“We’ve been way more focused since the loss against Hillcrest, and the game against Lebanon hurt us, but when you fall you just get right back up,” Jenkins said of his mindset after the losses.
Jenkins carried the ball 21 times for 115 yards and three touchdowns.
Ruff’s big night came mostly through the ground with 106 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns, but his arm provided for crucial plays when Parkview needed them most.
The Vikings’ second touchdown came on a 25-yard pass from Ruff to sophomore Connor Ratcliff. In the second half, Ruff completed two fake punt passes for 30 and 13 yards and would end both of those possessions with rushing touchdowns longer than 15 yards.
Ruff and Jenkins said that the play had been practiced often but never run in a game situation.
Outside of Barr’s noteworthy performance, Willard had success with carries from senior Luke He (68 yards, 2 TD, 16 carries) and junior Tanner Moore (27 yards 1 TD 6 carries), tallying 284 yards of total offense.
Willard ends the season 4-7. Parkview will face Lee’s Summit West, who defeated Central 49-0, on Monday, Nov. 5.
