Truman downs Ozark softball in state title rematch

Ozark, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Ozark and Truman met in the championship of the 23rd Annual Ozark Fall Softball Festival on Saturday. It was a rematch of last year’s Class 4 State Title game that was won by Truman 7-0.

The result on Saturday was much the same as Truman rode Oklahoma commit Paige Parker to an 11-2 win. Parker struck out 15 Tigers on Saturday.

The Lady Patriots staked Parker to an early lead with a three-run first and four-run second inning to get out to a 7-0 margin after two.

After that, Parker could relax and do what she does best and pound the strike zone.

“I just throw strikes because I know my defense is going to be there to back me up no matter what,” Parker said. “Ozark’s a great team and it was really good to jump ahead early against them.”

Ozark got two runs in the top of the sixth thanks to a hit to left field by Hailee Vigneaux that brought home Madi Jamieson and Myka Hayward.

Truman topped off the game by adding 4 more points in the 6th inning when Madison Vanderlinden’s hit to centerfield brought in Kayla Harrell, and Sara Jeffress double from the outfield. Parker and Brooke VunCannon also hit in Vanderlinden and Jeffress that brought the score to a final of 11-2.

Coach Amy Temples and her team went 5-0 for the tournament and said it was a little different this time for them than last year.

“Last year we struggled with their pitching just a little bit. I think Nimmo did a good job today for them on the mound. I think we swung the bats well. They’re a great team, we came out, and really did the little things well, we moved runners, hit well with runners in scoring position and capitalized on mistakes, and those are the little things that you have to do against a good team,” Temples said.

Parker continues to be dominant and is looking for another high school title before heading off to a program that has national accolades next season.

“They just came off of a national championship, so it’s a real honor to be able to go and be part of that program,” Parker said.

She can also swing the bat as well as she chipped in three hits to help her cause.
