Tiebreaker gives Ozark the victory in home triangular

Ozark, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Bolivar and Parkview traveled to Ozark on Tuesday night to take part in a triangular meet, where the Parkview Vikings were easily dispatched by both Bolivar (72-12) and Ozark (60-18.)

The match of the night was the Bolivar Liberators versus the Ozark Tigers. When the scores were tallied, the teams were tied 36-36, but the tiebreaker rule would give Ozark the win because they had four pins to Bolivar’s three.

The Liberators got up early on the Tigers when their lightweight wrestlers won their weight classes 113 through 138 to give them a 24-0 lead.

“Our lightweights did really well for us tonight,” said Bolivar coach Mel Hughes. “We left some points on the board, we made some young mistakes, didn’t finish out periods.  You get in the third period of a match and that last 8-10 seconds is ticking down and you’ve got to be wrestling the same way you did the first ten seconds of the period.”

The momentum would shift to Ozark’s side when Clint Godfrey would defeat Bolivar’s Derek Williams in the closest contest of the night, 7-6.  Ozark would then go on a roll and win the next five matchups.  The key for Ozark’s win was when Carson Altizer pinned his opponent to give Ozark a much needed six points in the 170 weight class.

Ozark Coach Jesse Zeugin said, “I’d call the turning point tonight Carson Altizer.  Cody Lindsay, he’s supposed to pin his opponent in his weight class, but when Altizer does it, it’s huge.  It’s not a surprise because we know he has the ability, but he hasn’t had a lot of varsity experience.”

Lindsay would pin his opponent to give Ozark a 30-26 lead, but that’s when things started to get interesting.  Bolivar and Ozark would both get open wins to tie the score 36-36 and the tiebreaker took effect.  The first tiebreaker was based on wins, but both teams had seven wins.  After looking at other tiebreakers, it came down to the number of pin falls each team had, and Ozark would get the extra point.

“We hate letting a win like that get away from us,” Hughes said.

“We’re just now starting to get our lineup full,” said Zeugin.  “We are just now getting our football guys back since they went pretty late in the season.  We’re getting two or three solid guys back in our lineup, but we are young.  A ton of seniors graduated last year, state-caliber guys.  We’ve had six freshmen and two first-year wrestlers in our starting varsity lineup, which is a tough way to go, but I’m happy with two wins tonight.”
