Teams from all over Missouri meet at the Ozarks Invitational

Springfield, Mo. (For Ozarks Sports Zone)  -- The 2012 Ozarks Invitational swimming & diving meet was held on Saturday at the Foster Natatorium with 17 schools participating. 

The Kickapoo Chiefs finished 3rd in the final team standings behind swimming powerhouses Rockhurst and Park Hill South.

“Although we (Kickapoo) didn’t win, we felt like we competed well today and that things are improving,” said Kickapoo and Nixa coach Pete Hill. “We felt like we had a good showing today.”

There were several state qualifying times from area swimmers, including Glendale junior Will Brand with a win in the 100 yard butterfly (52.97) and Kickapoo senior Taylor Strong who won the 100 yard backstroke (56.31). 

Other local state qualifying times were: Brand (2:02.56) & Central sophomore Evan Petrich (2:04.94) in the 200 yard IM; Central junior Ross Watson (22.97) in the 50 yard freestyle; Strong (50.44) in the 100 yard freestyle; and Petrich (1:03.18) in the 100 yard breastroke.  In the team events three local schools, Glendale (3:27.28), Kickapoo (3:28.29), and Central (3:28.77), set qualifying times in the 400 yard freestyle relay.
 
Glendale and Ozark coach Steve Boyce said: “When an event has this many kids that set state qualifying times this early in the season, it is a sign of good things to come.”

The next swimming meet on the calendar is the All-City Meet on September 14th featuring Springfield Central, Glendale, Kickapoo, Parkview, and Hillcrest. The meet starts at 3:30 pm.
