Swimmers begin with no-pressure meet

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Springfield Girls All-Relays Swim Meet was held at the Foster Natatorium on Tuesday night.  There was no official score kept and times weren’t as important as they will be later in the season.

“Tonight’s meet was like a football team playing in a Jamboree, with 18 different schools participating,” said Glendale coach Steve Boyce. “It gives our new swimmers a chance to get prepared for the season without any of the pressure.”

All of the events were relays with no individual events held. Times were kept, but only the lead off leg of a relay could qualify for a state qualifying time.

Many of the schools set their teams up with more experienced swimmers swimming with younger swimmers. Kickapoo junior Kelsey Messner said, “This gives our new swimmers a chance to learn, I can remember when we were freshmen, it can be intimating.”

The one event that was hardly intimidating was the just-for-fun “underwater relay.”

Each swimmer swam a length of the pool without surfacing for air… a fun event for the athletes but not exactly the best for the spectators.

Boyce said, “The kids love it and it gives them a chance to have some fun.”

The natatorium is a loud place in which to swim and new swimmers may get rattled by the noise. The Springfield Relays gives them a chance to get acclimated to the atmosphere.

“The whole point of this meet is to get the new swimmers used to swimming in a meet like this,” said Kickapoo senior Megan Miller, “It’s a completely different atmosphere.”

“It's really fun and a lot different from club swimming,” said Hillcrest freshman McKayla Larkin, “It's good that we can start off like this and not have pressure on you the first meet.”
“This gives a chance to bond as a team, to get ourselves unified but at the same time have some fun. As the season goes on this will get more serious.  That’s why tonight is more about fun and learning,” said Glendale junior Nikki Sisson. “Points weren’t kept, but we still had a great time."
