Spokane boys return two All-SWCL players

Spokane, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Head coach name:  Larry Brown

Assistant coach name: Mark Brown, Dylan Price

How many years as head coach: 9

Number of years at present school: 5

Coach’s current record at school: 64-41

Overall career record: 133-79

Last year’s record: 13-13    Conference record:  4-3

The Spokane Owls will take the court this season with motivation but inexperience on their side. Last season was one that saw the Owls run the full range of emotions, including the tragic loss of junior Forrest Varney, who collapsed during practice with heart failure. The Owls pushed eventual Class 2 state champions Billings to the brink before falling in overtime in the district semifinals. Gone from last year’s 13-13 squad are Randal Bolin, Kyle Campbell, Collin Ault and Shawn Byrom. They were major contributors for the Owls down the stretch and will be difficult to replace.

The Owls do return two SWCL All- Conference players in senior Hunter Bishop and senior Eric Bowman, both of whom will lead Spokane’s young squad. Senior Zach Turner also returns and brings a level of athleticism to the squad as well. The Owls will never forget Turner’s last second 3-pointer to tie the semifinal game, sending it into overtime.

“We have three returning starters from last year’s team who are very motivated. Our seniors are going to have to lead the way but we believe we have a group who can have a very special season,” said Owls coach Larry Brown.

The Owls will also feature returning letterwinners Cody McMurray (SR), Brandon McCoy (JR), Brandon Cloud (JR), and Jimmy Cooper (JR) to help round out the squad. Newcomers to the Spokane roster that will fight for varsity minutes are Chris Horton (JR), Christian Brown (FR) and Storm Price (FR).

“We will play some young, inexperienced kids who are very talented,” said coach Brown.“We play a very tough schedule so we want to compete in every game. Our goal is to be playing our best basketball in February and compete for a district championship.”
