Rogersville tennis wins district title

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Logan-Rogersville defeated guest Forsyth in five matches Tuesday night winning the District 10 championship title.  The deciding match, played by Hannah Nixon for Rogersville and Avery Lawson for Forsythe, lasted an astounding two hours with both sets going into the tiebreaker.

After all the matches were finished, Nixon said, “I worked really hard, I like people who really challenge me.  I lost to [Lawson] last time we played … [so] it feels really good to win districts this way.”

Logan-Rogersville has a perfect district record this season finishing at 14-0.  Their coach, Sarah Worsham, has been pleased with the undefeated team’s performance.  She says that Rogersville has a young team and, even though they have many wins under their belt already, we can expect even better from them next year.

“My girls played a lot this summer and they are still young.  I’ve just got the one senior [Karley Eakins], but for my team, the improvement they’ve made has really been just over the summer,” Worsham said.  “We had a tremendous improvement over last season.  We lost in the [district] semifinals to republic last year.”

Forsythe may not have had too good of a night, but they did win one big upset match.  Sami Johnson for Forsythe won the number one spot match over Kristyn Young for Rogersville.

Young started out strong in the first set, but Johnson managed to come back from a 4-1 deficit to win in the tiebreaker.  Johnson commanded the second set, defeating Young 6-2.  When the two rivals met earlier this season, however, it was Young who had walked away with the victory.

“It was a great match.  I’ve played Kristyn before and it was a close match; she won in tiebreaker,” said Johnson.  “She’s really good and I’m actually really excited that I beat her.”
A frustrated, though confident Young said, “[Johnson] played a good match but now I’m ready to go out and play doubles and win.”

It did not come down to the doubles matches, however.  Rogersville ended up winning every other match, including victories in straight sets by Eakins (fourth spot) and Emma Ethridge (sixth spot).  Shortly after Young and Johnson finished up, Nixon won her match and, with the outcome decided, the two teams decided to call it a night.

Rogersville will go on to the sectionals; their opponent is still being decided.
