Pell, Yeary return to lead Rogersville XC

Rogersville, Mo. (OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Rogersville Wildcats return a lot of talent from last year’s cross country teams as four of the five state qualifiers are back. Leading the way will be sophomore all-stater Allie Pell on the girls’ side.

Pell was a bit of an unknown coming in to the season as a freshman. She is unknown no more after a great finish to the year that included a 20th place finish at the Class 3 state meet in a time of 20:18.

“You never know, especially with freshmen kids, what to expect,” Rogersville head cross country coach Kevin Boyer said. “I thought she (Pell) had the potential. Halfway through the season she started really blossoming with her mileage and getting her base up. She didn’t have a real big base coming out of eighth grade into her freshman year.”

Last year’s success and putting in a better base has led to high expectations for the sophomore.

“Allie expects big things from herself and she will have a great year if she stays healthy,” Boyer said.

Fellow sophomore and state qualifier Christina Harter is back along with junior leaders Emma Leonard and Aubrie Melugin.

The Wildcats also will add a runner in the form of Addison Gold. She played tennis for Rogersville up until this season, but comes from a running family according to Boyer.

On the boys’ side, two state qualifiers return in senior Chandler Yeary and junior Ben Bach.

Yeary, who has applied to the US Naval Academy and will be a team leader for both sides, has had an especially good summer.

“Chandler has had a great summer,” Boyer said. “He ran with a track club out in New Mexico. He has been training with some of the boys from Glendale. He has put in a lot of miles and his base is going to be very big.”

Yeary finished 88th at the Class 3 state meet last fall. Bach ran stride-for-stride with graduated teammate Aaron Freeman as he finished 57th.

Jacob Zahn will likely slot in at No. 3 for the Wildcats this fall.
