Parkview Lady Vikings look to improve from previous seasons

Springfield, Mo. (Ozarks Sports Zone)  -- Last season for the Lady Vikings was rough, but there are many expectations to be made for this upcoming year. Coach Carla Barker is in her fifth year at Parkview and fourth season as head coach, she’s optimistic to see what her team can build on this fall.

“0-21 isn’t a very good record, but we continued to improve throughout the entire season. And that momentum has crossed over into this season, we have more confidence and positive outlook on our performance. We’re trying to rebuild our program, while establishing confidence to produce quality games”, Barker said.

Parkview’s strong point defensively is their infield, junior catcher Kaylee Zuknick shows commitment seeking private instructor lessons in the offseason improving both her bat and arm. She claimed second team All-Ozark Conference last season behind the plate as just a sophomore.

Senior utility player Amanda Frey will be making use of her talents at first base this season, but will be playing all around the field. Her solid bat and strength, mixed with her smarts of the game on the bases, will be key for the Vikings to score runs. In 2010, Amanda was awarded second team all-conference for pitching, showing her vast skill anywhere on the field.

“Leadership is very important, especially when games or seasons aren’t going the way you want them to. These girls help the overall team morale, regardless of winning or losing,” Barker said. “Having more girls this year with experience and a positive outlook, will lead to a more fun and productive season.”

Incoming freshman shortstop Elizabeth Yakes brings both skill and young leadership to the Vikings. She has the fundamentals, talent, and hard work that has been seen throughout the offseason.

Barker admitted that “we must figure out a more conventional hitting plan, and a reliable pitching strategy. Being able to throw strikes and score runs makes or breaks a team.”

The Lady Vikings plan to score more runs in games this season, competing for a few wins in their tough Ozark Conference schedule.
