Mt. Vernon will feature 12 seniors this season. None more important that quarterback Alex Hausman. Last season the Mountaineers had a 5-2 when Hausman went down with an injury. Without him, they finished the year 0-3. Having him back and healthy is vital for Mt. Vernon in 2013.
"As long as Alex is on the field we have a chance to do some things," said Mountaineers head coach Ozzie Riley. "We like to try to keep the ball in his hands quite a bit."
Riley is in his second season as head coach in Mt. Vernon. While last year's team may have been more physically talented than this year's sqaud, they were also new to his system. This year, unfamiliarity shouldn't be an issue.
"We're further along mentally than we were last year," Riley said. The kids understand what we're trying to do and they're doing a good job."
The Mountaineers defense only gave up a little over 18 points per game last season, but Riley thinks they can be even better.
"We have some kids out there that can run. We shored up our secondary a little bit. So I think we'll definitely be pretty salty."
Combine an even better defense with a healthy QB, and it could be a fun season in Mt. Vernon.
