Mount Vernon downs Aurora in five innings

Mark Moriondo of Mount Vernon used three base hits and four RBIs to almost equal Aurora's complete offensive production, including a walk-off single that plated two Mountaineers to call the game at 14-4 after five innings Monday night.

Josh Moore threw a complete game for the Mountaineers, giving up four runs on four hits to the Houn Dawgs, in just his second start of the season.

"We've been moving some arms around and Josh Moore was able to work out of jams for the win," said Mount Vernon head coach Nick Swillum. "He threw a one-hitter in six and a third innings his first outing of the season. He didn't have that kind of control tonight, but he battled for the win."

Aurora scored one run in the top of the first on a sacrifice from Spencer Shreve to plate Tristan Dunning.

The Mountaineers answered with two of their own in the bottom of the first frame, as Dominic Swillum drove in Kyler Shoff and Grayson Ketron with a single to left field.

Mount Vernon's big inning came in the bottom of the third, leading 2-1. It was then that they sent 12 men to the plate and scored six runs on just four base hits. The inning was highlighted by Moriondo's double to the center field wall that scored two Mountaineers, and a two RBI single by Logan Rycraft.

The Mountaineers scored four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth to round out to 14 runs. Aurora scored one in the fourth and then rallied for two in the fifth on a two-out pinch hit single from senior Cody Coatney.

"We just don't come to play a complete game," said Aurora head coach James Hoffman. "We compete for a few innings and then things start to turn. It's very frustrating and hard to explain."

Besides Moriondo's four RBIs, three other Mountaineers had two, including Shoff, Rycraft and Swillum. Skylar Phillips stole three bases for Mount Vernon, who now has 62 stolen bases on the season.

The Mountaineers improved to 12-7 on the season, while Aurora dropped to 2-11.
