Monett upsets undefeated Cassville to reach state quarters

CASSVILLE, MO - The Monett Cubs had held Cassville out of the end zone all game. In the final minute the Wildcats had one more chance, but on 4th down Garrett Kirk's passed sailed over the head of Ty Craig sealing the 10-6  victory for Monett giving the Cubs the Class 3 District 4 Championship.

"Cassville is a great program, they do a great job," said Chad Depee, Monett Head Coach.  "We're blessed to be able to come here and put together a good game and come out on the good end."

Cassville carried a 6-3 lead into halftime. On Monett's opening possession of the 2nd half the Cubs marched right down the field.  Aaron Hall capped off the drive with a 5 yard scoring run.  It was the only touchdown scored by either team.  The Monett defense carried the Cubs the rest of the game preventing the Wildcats from ever getting on track.

"We had a great game plan, our defense played lights out," said Kyle Woods, Monett Quarterback.  "On offense we committed one turnover, other than that we got it done."
"When we played well on defense we've got a shot and we needed that and they came through," said Depee.

Following a Monett turnover in the 1st half Cassville kicker Stone Phelps connected on a 33 yard field goal putting the Wildcats in front 3-0 in the 2nd quarter.  Monett answered with a field goal, then as time expired in the 1st half, Phelps hit his 2nd field goal of the game from 35 yards out giving Cassville a 6-3 lead going into the locker room.

This was the 2nd meeting of the year between Cassville and Monett, when the two teams met in Monett September 28th Cassville won 30-20.  Since then, Monett has won 5 of 6 games including the victory over Cassville.

"We wanted this rematch with Cassville," said Woods.  "We got it and it paid off."

Monett advances to the Class 3 Quarterfinals and will host Eldon Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

"Now you take that momentum and we look forward to going another week," said Depee.

Cassville misses out on a 5th straight appearance in the state quarterfinals and the Wildcats finish the season 11-1.
