Marionville drops Fair Grove in Mid-Lakes showdown

Marionville, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Marionville Lady Comets defeated the visiting Fair Grove Lady Eagles 51-37 on senior night behind a late fourth quarter push. With a balanced offense and strong defense, the Lady Comets asserted themselves as the dominant team in the match up.
Fair Grove jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter with a 7-2 run to open the game. Senior post player Morgan Kensinger was on a hot streak, scoring six points and giving her team an 11-8 lead headed into the second.

Marionville went on a rally in the second quarter to take a 15-14 lead with 3:30 remaining in the period, forcing a Fair Grove timeout. In a quarter that was dictated by which team could maintain the largest and longest runs, Marionville ended the second with a rally to tie the game at 19-19 before the half.

Both Marionville and Fair Grove were missing their key post players, Kensinger for the Lady Eagles and senior Amy Hicks for the Lady Comets. The two posts were forced to stay on the bench for the majority of the quarter due to foul trouble. Even with both of their established post players out of the game, the teams were able to keep their offenses in rhythm through their point guards. Senior DeAmbra Pilkinton scored seven points to lead Fair Grove in scoring in the first-half. Meanwhile for Marionville, sophomore Jaycie Dishman scored six points to lead the Lady Comets.

The game continued to be a back-and-forth battle in the third quarter, as neither team was able to gain more than a four-point lead. However, the Lady Eagles were beginning to get into foul trouble. Combining the fouls with the mass amount of turnovers, their offense struggled to find a rhythm.

Marionville began to find a groove on both ends of the floor in the second-half. The Lady Comets committed fewer fouls and began executing their offense more effectively. Senior guard Aubree Brown scored eight points in the fourth quarter, five of which came from the free throw line. Offensive rebounds were huge in the Lady Comets victory; especially as they went on to outscore Fair Grove 25-11 in the fourth quarter.

Fouls came back to haunt the Lady Eagles, as Marionville was in the bonus the majority of the fourth quarter. The Lady Comets were clutch from the free throw line, knocking down the shots they had to make in order to seal the win. The dagger came when Kensinger landed awkwardly on her left leg, sending her to the bench. After that, Marionville was able to clinch the game.

Fair Grove will head home face Stockton next. Marionville will go on to Monett to face the Cubs.
