Marionville downs Chadwick in season opener

Chadwick, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Marionville Lady Comets defeated the Chadwick Lady Cardinals on Monday night, 53-23. Both teams struggled early but it was the Lady Comets who managed to shake off the ‘first-game jitters’ and pull away with a blowout win.

“We started out a little bit anxious.  We didn’t shoot the ball very well tonight but I thought we defended pretty well,” said Marionville head coach Ted Young.

Chadwick would take an early 9-2 lead but the Lady Cardinals would see that lead evaporate quickly as Marionville would hold Chadwick to just two more points to take a 23-11 halftime lead.

The second half saw more defensive pressure from Marionville, and Chadwick could never get on track as the Lady Comets increased their lead to 41-18 after three quarters. The Lady Comets dominated the Lady Cardinals in every facet of the game, showing why they are a team to be reckoned with this year.

“We ran the floor tonight better than we did all of last year,” said coach Young. “Amy Hicks played a good game; if we can get some points out of her in the paint it’s going to be really helpful.  If we get Jaycie (Dishman) and Josie (Young) to do what they do and then get one or two more to score, that makes us pretty hard to guard.”

Chadwick would only have three 2-point field goals on the night (along with four 3-pointers) and were out rebounded on both the offensive and defensive boards.

“I don’t know how many years it’s been since I’ve played in Chadwick, but it’s a tough place to play.  We feel fortunate.  He (Chadwick coach Darin Meinders) does a good job with that team, they play really hard.  They missed some shots that they normally make as well,” said coach Young.

Marionville would get the turbo-clock running on Chadwick before the night was over and would coast home to a 53-23 win.

“We were all kind of nervous, it’s our first game of the year and it showed,” said Marionville sophomore Josie Young.  “They (Chadwick) are a tough team but we just kept up the pressure and ran the floor really well. We talk every day in practice how we’re not going to sneak up on anybody; everybody knows who we are now.  We’ve got to be ready for it but we are up for the challenge.”
