Lone senior leads Lady Irish over Bolivar

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- The Senior Night festivities at Springfield Catholic didn’t take long, but the lone senior volleyball player, middle hitter Erin Roebuck made a lasting impression with her final home game. Roebuck, with 12 kills and 3 blocks, led the Lady Irish to a 2-0 victory over Bolivar 25-19, 25-11.

The first game was close with Bolivar taking a 10-6 lead behind the heavy hitting of sophomore Madison Campbell. Roebuck responded with three kills to pull Catholic within two at 12-10. The Lady Liberators expanded the lead to 16-12 forcing Catholic head coach Marci Johnson to call a time out. The Lady Irish battled back in spite of some great hitting by Bolivar senior Peyton Peavey, to pull within one at 19-18.

Catholic junior outside hitter Reggie Thurston began an incredible run of great serves and her ace gave the Lady Irish the lead at 20-19 causing Bolivar to call time out. Thurston never wavered and served out the rest of the game. She had aces on the final two points to complete her run of 8-0 to close the game.

The momentum carried over into the second game as Catholic used a 10-0 run to break it open at 16-2. Roebuck punctuated the big win with kills on the last two points.

Coach Johnson was pleased with her team’s performance, noting, “The girls really wanted this one for Erin because she’s been such a huge part, not just this year but in building up this program and I think the girls really wanted to do that for her tonight.” Johnson added, “Erin also came out with a big game tonight with 12 kills and 3 blocks.”

Roebuck said of her senior night performance, “It was a great feeling. I just left everything I had out on the court because I knew this would be my last night ever in this gym, so I wanted to make every point count.”

These two teams will meet again in the first round of the Class 3 District 10 tournament in Bolivar Monday night at 5:00 p.m. Bolivar head coach Stacey Ramsey said, “We are looking forward to the district tournament. We’re going to come out hopefully with guns loaded and be ready to play ball.”

Johnson added, “I think both teams got their first look at each other so it’ll be interesting to see what kind of adjustments we both make. We’re looking forward to another match on Monday.”

Springfield Catholic is now 15-13 overall and 1-5 in conference. Bolivar is 13-17 overall and 0-6 in conference.

Catholic won the JV game 2-1 by scores of 23-25, 25-17, and 25-15.
