Liberty takes control of SCA with 57-34 win over Mountain Grove

Mountain Grove, Mo. (OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- In a match up of undefeated teams with the South Central Association lead in the balance MV/BT Liberty quarterback Jaelon Acklin ran for 147 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries.  Acklin also passed for 217 yards and two touchdowns, both coming in the second half on the way to Liberty’s 57-34 victory over Mountain Grove.

“It's big to come on the road against the third ranked team in Missouri, it was a battle”, said Liberty Head Coach Darin Acklin.  “They're better, we're just lucky we're a little bit better. “

It was the first loss of the season for Mountain Grove (5-1), the Panthers took an early 7-0 lead on Bobby Otwell’s 13 yard touchdown pass to Ricky Healy.  Otwell later added a 23 yard touchdown run giving Mountain Grove a 14-6 2nd quarter lead.  Liberty (6-0) answered with 18 points to close the first half including two touchdown runs for Acklin.

In the second half Class 2’s second ranked Eagles turned to the passing game.  Acklin connected with James Denton on scoring strikes of 65 and 41 yards.

“We made a few adjustments and had some plays I hadn't called yet after halftime and luckily they worked because we needed every point”, said Darin Acklin.

Jaelon had extra motivation playing for his friend and former Liberty Eagle Paris Walkup who was killed earlier this week as the result of a rock slide in Colorado.

“He was always one of my biggest role models and I always wanted to wear number two for him and hopefully he knows I won this game for him”, said Jaelon Acklin.

Mountain Grove running back Bryan Porter rushed for 159 yards on 20 carries with three touchdowns.

Liberty hosts Cabool on October 11th, while Mountain Grove will look to bounce back at Salem.
