The Parkview Lady Vikings awoke after a slow first half to run away with a big conference rivalry win over the Kickapoo Lady Chiefs, 47-39.
“In the third quarter our defense really stepped up and I think that was the difference in the ball game,” said Lady Viking scoach Keri Nichols.
Parkview outscored Kickapoo 13 to 2 for the first seven minutes of the second half. Junior forward Aubrey Buckley scored nine-points and picked four rebounds, a steal and a block in the third quarter.
"We talked at halftime putting more pressure on them coming out since [Kickapoo] doesn’t like pressure and they were going to be rotating players in and out of the game,” said Buckley, who finished the night with 27 points and a total of nine rebounds, three blocks, and two steals and went 13 of 15 from the free-throw line.
“Buckley averages about 14 free throw attempts a game so we expect that to continue and take a lot of pressure off the other kids,” said Nichols.
Turnover troubles plagued both sides in the second-half, as Kickapoo twice failed to in-bound and forfeited ten other possessions.
Parkview’s giveaway woes came from allowing the Lady Chiefs a last gasp in the fourth quarter, where sophomore guard Jordyn Danzer scored five points under two minutes in an desperation drive that cut Kickapoo’s deficit to four with four minutes remaining. The hustle of Lady Viking guards Kianna McDaniel and Tyra Moore staved off the threat of a comeback.
