Lady Patriots spoil senior night in Cassville

Cassville, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- On senior night in Cassville, it was a pair of sophomores from visiting East Newton that stole the show as the Lady Patriots dominated from the opening tip for a 50-19 Big 8 conference win.

Sophomore guard Emily Brummett got East Newton off to a flying start, scoring 7 of their first 11 points as they took an 11-2 lead.  After a bucket by Cassville Emily Speakman momentarily broke the Lady Patriots momentum, Brummett ran off seven of East Newton’s next nine points to start a 15-0 run that gave them a 26-4 lead.  Speakman would score again before the half to make it 26-6 at the break.

East Newton head coach Marty Rinehart credited not only Brummett’s shooting, but also her transition game for the fast start.

“She works hard.  We really didn’t shoot it well but she hit a couple of long ones and a long two,” said Rinehart. “She got out in transition and she got the benefit of some layups.”

With Brummett playing the role of Ms. Outside, sophomore post Kourtney Brewster took over the Ms. Inside role to start the second-half.  Brewster would log 7 of her 11 points as part of a 12-2 run that was capped by Brummett’s second three pointer of the night.

“Kourtney was a handful and it was good to see her get going.” said Rinehart.  “It probably helped that we hit some shots there.”

The run would give East Newton a 38-8 lead with under 3 minutes to play in the third quarter.

Meanwhile, East Newton’s pressure defense was making sure the lead didn’t shrink by yielding very few good shots for Cassville.  And after a slow start, the Lady Patriots dominated the boards, finishing with a 31-18 advantage and limiting Cassville’s second shot opportunities.  Speakman would score 7 of her team high 11 points in the final period, but the Lady Cats could get no closer than 26.

Brummett would finish with 17 points to lead all players on the night.  Brewster would add 6 rebounds to her 11 points.

Rinehart was succinct when asked to grade his team’s performance.

“This time of year you just hope you control the things you can, work hard for 32 minutes, and play defense and I think we did a good job of that.”
