Lady Irish burn the nets, Greenwood

Consider it a heat check.

In the first half of the annual Greenwood-Catholic intercity clash, Lady Irish junior Chelsea Collins launched a 3-pointer from well behind the college 3-point line.

How far back was she?

“She said as soon as she shot it that she was embarrassed,” said Catholic coach Josh Miller. “She didn’t know where she was at. But it went in. Sometimes you just have those kind of nights.”

Everything Catholic put up from long range in the first half seemed to be falling, and Greenwood never found an answer. Collins led all players with 16 points as Catholic beat the Lady Jays 47-23 on Friday night, their second win over the Blue and White this season.

“If (Catholic) keeps shooting like that, they’re going to do well against a lot of people,” said Greenwood coach Kent Hedgpeth. “You gotta pick your poison and in that case, they hit (shots).”

Greenwood trailed 30-7 at halftime and had just two field goals in the first half (two 3-pointers from Crosby Garrison).

Collins hit two long-range treys that sparked Catholic into a 14-0 run to end the first half.

“(We) haven’t shot like that all year,” Miller said.

Crosby Garrison led Greenwood with nine points. The Lady Jays (10-7 overall) were held to single digits in all four quarters.

Catholic also beat Greenwood 44-25 at the Pink and White in December. Miller said the second outcome became lopsided because his team“couldn’t miss.”

“Going up against a bigger, little quicker athlete in Catholic, it took us a bit to adjust to the foot speed,” Hedgpeth said. “We probably took some bad shots, but we had some good shots; we just couldn’t convert them. That might have been because we were a little out of our comfort zone.”

Catholic (6-12) opens Central Ozark Conference Small Division play on Monday with a trip to Hollister. Greenwood plays at Greenfield on Tuesday.
