Lady Crusaders defeat John Brown 59-56

Jessica Rumfelt’s three-point play with 14 seconds left gave Evangel a 59-56 lead over John Brown (Ark.) and the Crusaders’ women’s basketball team held on for a win Monday at the Ashcroft Center.

Rumfelt, a senior from Bolivar, hit a five-foot shot from the right baseline and drew a foul breaking a 56-56 tie. She converted her free throw to give Evangel a three-point lead 59-56.

The Golden Eagles had a chance to tie when Tiaunshe Brown was called for a foul on Kortni Bradenberg’s 26-foot shot attempt with 2.6 seconds left. Bradenberg, who was 15 for 15 from the foul line for the season, missed all three free throw attempts.

Evangel forward Sierra McSpadden finished with 20 points and 8 rebounds. She scored 18 of her points in the second half and hit a three-point basket with 53 seconds remaining that gave Evangel a lead 56-55.

Brown added 17 points and Rumfelt 11 for the Crusaders who dressed only eight players as Emily Akins missed her second game of the season with an injury and Jessica Lessmann was out with an illness.

Evangel scored the first eight points of the game and held John Brown scoreless until the 13:05 mark of the first half. The Golden Eagles still led at halftime, however, 21-20.

Sierra Shipley led John Brown with 14 points.

The Golden Eagles dropped to 3-5 while Evangel picked up their first win improving to 1-4.

Evangel plays in the Missouri Southern Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Crusaders will face Pittsburg State on Friday and Missouri Southern on Saturday in Joplin.
