Lady Crusader rally falls short

A short-handed Evangel team rallied but fell short in a 60-53 loss to Baker Monday at the Ashcroft Center. The Crusaders were without starting point guard Amanda Landolt and back-up guard Tiaunshe Brown due to injuries but managed to rally from 13 points down to be within two points of the lead inside the game’s final two minutes only to have Baker hit free throws down the stretch putting the game out of reach.

Emily Akins had a game high 24 points and contributed 7 rebounds leading Evangel. Jessica Rumfelt added eight points and her three-point basket with 3:44 left pulled the Crusaders within two points of the lead 55-51.

Rashida Simpson led Baker with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

The Wildcats won for the ninth time in 11 games and improved to 19-9 and 12-4 in the Heart of America conference. The Crusaders dropped to 7-15 and 6-10 in the league.

Evangel is at home Thursday hosting conference leader and ninth ranked MidAmerica Nazarene. Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. at the Ashcroft Center.
