Hollister guard Kyle David was on fire from the opening tip as he hit a pair of 3s as part of his 8 points in the first quarter, helping the Tigers to a 14-6 lead. David hit another 3 to start the second and it looked like a blowout was eminent.
But Woods was matching David on the score sheet as he notched Monett’s first 11 points. The Hollister lead grew to 23-11 before a shift by the Cubs to a 2-3 zone defense began to turn the tide.
A pair of buckets from Monett forward Caleb Blue and a three-point play from Woods helped put Monett within 27-22 of Hollister at the half. The Cubs would score the first six points of the third to take a 28-27 lead.
Meanwhile the Tigers were having problems finding the hoop until they finally got on the board in the second half with 2:17 left in the third. Woods was whistled for an intentional foul on Tigers guard Trey McDowell, who would hit both free throws. Then back to back buckets from Blake Woods and Andy Wenger would put Hollister back up 33-28.
Again Monett would respond as Wood scored five points to close out the quarter and send the game to the final period tied at 33.
With David absent from the score sheet since early in the second period, Hollister coach Chris Kennedy told his team to get aggressive.
“We talked about attacking and working the ball from side to side. And when we did that it spread their defense out a bit and got Kyle some shots,” he said.
David responded with 8 points in the frame. And after a closely contested 8 minutes, his pair of free throws gave Hollister a 49-46 lead with 7 seconds remaining.
Monett would receive one last chance as Woods was fouled shooting a 3 at time expired. He went to the line needing to hit all three to force overtime. “He’s our go-to player,” said Monett head coach Ty Goetz. “I couldn’t ask for another player to be on the line to end the game.”
But Woods would miss the first one to end the game.
