Evangel baseball signs 5 for 2014 season.

Springfield, Mo. – The Evangel University baseball team has signed five high school players for the 2014 season.

Three of the signees are from southwest Missouri: Deric Link from Fair Grove, Bryce Wilson of Clever and Caleb Kaufman out of Weaubleau. Evangel also signed Austin Alfrey from Elkhorn, Neb. and Blake McCarty out of Owasso, Okla.

“This is one of our most successful early signing periods in recent history,” said Evangel head baseball coach Lance Quessenberry. “We have five quality commitments for 2014.”

Deric Link is an infielder and pitcher. At Fair Grove, he was named a 1st team all-conference as a junior last year on the infield and was a 2nd team all-conference pitcher. Link has been on an all-conference team since his freshman season and carries a 3.9 grade point average in high school.

Bryce Wilson has been on two state Final Four teams at Clever HS playing shortstop and pitcher. He was a 1st team all-conference selection as a junior for the Blue Jays last year and has a 3.4 grade point average.

Caleb Kaufman has been an all-conference and all-district selection at Weaubleau HS in his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. He was also a 2nd team all-state pick and a 1st team all-state selection last year as a junior. He carries a 3.5 GPA.

Austin Alfrey attends Elkhorn HS and was an honorable mention all-state performer in Nebraska last year as a junior. He was also a 1st team selection in the Eastern Midland Conference and has a 3.4 GPA.

Blake McCarty will come to Evangel from one of the top high school baseball programs in the nation at Owasso HS in Oklahoma. Owasso was in the state title game last season and has played in the state championship in 14 of the last 15 season and has won 11 state titles. McCarty was an outfielder and pitcher for Owasso last year and focus on pitching with the Crusaders. He carries a 3.95 GPA.

“We very excited to have each of these talented young men come into our program for the 2014 season,” said coach Quessenberry. “They are talented on the baseball field and in the classroom and are high character young men.”
The Crusaders went 28-21 last year, 16-10 in the conference and won the Heart of America conference Eastern Division. Evangel is scheduled to open the 2013 season Feb. 5 at Williams Baptist (Ark.).
