Defense sparks Republic to victory

The Republic Lady Tigers cashed in on repeated Branson turnovers in the second quarter to win the White Division title at the 2012 Pink and White Lady Classic on Saturday night.

With the help of its full-court press, Republic stretched a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter into a 13-point advantage midway through the second. Alice Heinzler scored 19 and Sarah Kreul added 17 points as Republic beat Branson 63-51.

“We’ve depended on (the press) quite a bit during the tournament,” said Republic coach Kris Flood. “We get a little spurt there where we make a couple of runs, the 6-0 and 8-0 run, and got some easy baskets.”

Branson was forced to play catchup in the second half. Despite a breakout game from freshman guard Ashley Forrest (20 points), Branson couldn’t get closer than five points.

“Mentally, I think it got to us,” said Branson coach Kip Bough. “You’d see, we’d get a big stop then travel before we even got to halfcourt. There were so many walks and unforced turnovers that kind of led to that. It snowballed from there.

“In the second half, the game was much closer than the final score turned out to be. It kind of got a little loose there at the end.”

Branson closed to within 44-39 late in the third quarter on two Hadley Blake free throws. Republic regained control in the fourth quarter, and went up 53-43 on Heinzler’s basket.

“Both teams, four days in… I think play got a little sloppy at times,” Flood said. “It got to the point where both teams seemed to be tired with no legs.”

Republic remains undefeated at 9-0 and returns to play Jan. 5. The Lady Tigers travel to St. Louis for the Prepcasts Elite Shootout V, facing Westminster Christian Academy at 5:45 p.m. at DeSmet High School.

Westminster is coached by former Mizzou star Steve Stipanovich, and is led by 17-point per game scorer Sadie Stipanvich. The Lady Wildcats were a Class 4 final four team last season.
