Fair Grove, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com) -- The Bolivar Liberators defeated the Fair Grove Eagles 9-2 on Wednesday night. The start of the game was delayed for over an hour when there were no umpires at the beginning of the game. Replacement umps were found and players, coaches and fans were glad to finally be playing baseball after this past week’s snowfall.
They would increase their lead to 5-0 until Fair Grove would score their first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning on a double by Deric Link. Bolivar’s pitcher, Joey Davolt, would allow just the one run through 6 2/3 innings.
“I just try to throw the ball and let my defense make plays, I’ve got a good defense behind me,” said Davolt. “In the seventh inning I just got thinking too much about closing the game out. I walked three hitters. I kind of let it get away from me.”
When told he had eight strikeouts in the game, Davolt said, “I’m not a strikeout pitcher, I didn’t know I had that many. I rely on my defense.”
The hitting star of the night was Gunnels, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs.
“I just came out and swung the bat, and good things happened,” said Gunnels. “But having two strikeouts where you watch strike three kind of humbles you. I think we are playing really well as a team this year and as long as we keep on doing what we’re doing, we should go pretty far. I thought Joey pitched lights out tonight.”
Liberators coach Brad Roweton nearly let Davolt go the distance.
“Joey threw a nice game against a quality club,” Roweton said. “He took care of business until the seventh inning. They started to rally like a good team does and I tried to let him finish it out. This early in the season I didn’t want him to throw too much, but at the same time I wanted him to finish the game. We brought in J.D. Murders to get the last out.”
Murders struck out Link with bases loaded to end the game.
Defensively Bolivar played the game with no errors, where Fair Grove had three.
“I think our defense is playing real well right now,” Davolt said. “Our first baseman, Nathan (DeRossett) had a heck of a game tonight. He hustled to everything, didn’t make any errors, made some nice plays, I’m proud of him.”
