Crane clicks on all cylinders in win over Clever

Springfield, Mo. (OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Crane expected to play Class 1 power Scott County Central coming into the Ozark Mountain Shootout at Glendale, but the weather had different designs.

Scott County had to cancel and a familiar name stepped into the game in Clever.

“It was difficult (to prepare on short notice), but it is a conference opponent so we are kind of familiar with each other with what we like to do,”Crane head coach Dale Lamberth said. “I think what helped me out the most was on our snow days when we were getting games cancelled out early they were still playing their tournament. We went up and watched them a little bit. I actually got to see them play twice so I think we had a benefit from that game.”

That benefit showed as Crane jumped out to a 37-21 lead at the break over Clever led by 12 first-half points each from Justin Washington and Zach Chastain.

Washington provided a spark for the Pirates all night with high energy plays.

“He (Washington) has definitely become our emotional leader. We ride on his adrenalin,” Lamberth said. “When he is sluggish, we are sluggish and when he is up they turn it up another beat.”

Crane also was deadly from three-point range with 11 total three-pointers in the game. Clay Stumpff had all of his 15 points via the three-point shot and Zach Chastain knocked down 3 three’s and finished with 21 points.

“They answered my challenge of being better shooters (and) being more consistent. Up until this week we had our guys going one game at a time. It was like they took turns on who wanted to be aggressive and who didn’t,” Lamberth said. “Finally we got them clicking on all cylinders.”

Washington led all scorers with 22 points as the Pirates rolled to a 76-40 win.

Even with the big win, Lamberth still sees room for improvement for his team.

“We still have to get better defensively and offensively,” Lambreth said. “The shots fell our way (today).  They are a conference opponent we have to play them again this year on their floor so shots can easily fall the other way.”

Jared Albright led Clever with 19 points on the night.
