Crane beats Parkview in Stephanie Phillips Classic

Springfield, Mo. (  -- Crane was the lone local winner on the first day of the 2012 Stephanie Phillips Classic at Kickapoo High School. The Lady Pirates defeated Parkview in the final game of Thursday night.

Here’s a recap of the action.

Jefferson City 68, Rogersville 60 (OT)
The Lady Wildcats let one slip away against Jefferson City.

Rogersville led for most of the game, until a run in the final minutes by the Lady Jays sent the game into overtime. In the 4-minute extra session, Jefferson City would score the final 10 points of the game.
Rogersville’s Sam Stiles hit 1 of 2 free throw attempts in the final seconds and regulation ended in a 58-all tie.  But after Danae Cole’s basket on Rogersville’s first possession in OT, the Lady Wildcats did not score again.

With Rogersville trailing 50-49 halfway through the fourth quarter, the two teams went on a back-and-forth 3-point sequence.

A Stiles 3-pointer put Rogersville ahead 52-50. Devon Stegeman gave the lead back to Jefferson City with a trey of her own.

Rogersville’s Natalie Spaulding then hit a 3 to make it 55-53. Stegeman hit another 3, this time while being fouled, for a 4-point play that put Jefferson City ahead 57-55.

Rogersville led 39-31 after three quarters, but burned itself at the free throw line. The Lady Wildcats missed nine of their final 12 free throw attempts in the game.

The Lady Chiefs had no answer for Rogers senior Taylor Strickland, who poured in a game-high 25 points.

Trailing 20-19, Crane scored 11 straight to take a 10-point lead. Parkview got as close as six in the second half, but Crane always had an answer – mostly in the form of senior Maggie McMenamy, who finished with 32 points.

Her breakaway layup just before the third-quarter buzzer gave Crane a 49-41 lead entering the final period.

Parkview, which finished with 24 turnovers, was playing its first game of the season and had difficulties against Crane’s full-court press. Aubrey Buckley led Parkview with 16 points.
