Catholic baseball edges Parkview in extra innings

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Third-ranked Springfield Catholic needed an extra inning to take down Parkview 2-1 on Monday, with both squads featuring solid play from their starting pitching.

The Vikings struck first with an Andrew Kendrick sacrifice fly RBI off of Fightin’ Irish starter Eric Smith. The first baseman’s bat plated sophomore lead-off man Hunter Steinmetz, who had reached base with a bunt single and moved to third after a wild pitch and passed ball.

Smith would settle down and allow only one more hit and strike out two in the seventh to keep the game tied after Catholic scored centerfielder Colin Shaughnessy with left fielder Drew Rash earning an RBI single to center off of senior Parkview relief pitcher Mitch Carriger.

“The goal is every game is to fill the strikezone and let the defense work but sometimes you want to blow it by people when you’re feeling good,” said Smith who struck out eight and walked five en route to his third win of the season. “I had a couple of rough innings in the middle but I’ve started and ended games well.”

Smith would get the win in the top of the eighth as designated hitter Eric Atwell hit a hard double off of right fielder turned reliever Landan Ruff into deep center which scored third baseman Tyler Ast before the inning ended as shortstop Brayton Ballenger was thrown out at home.

“On that at-bat I wanted to be aggressive and hit a good fastball after I got some confidence hitting a double in the last inning," said Atwell.

Eric Smith was moved to center field as Matthew Tipton moved from first base to pitch the bottom of the eighth as the Fightin’ Irish allowed only one man, on an error, and ended the game fielding a fly ball off of Landan Ruff.

“We wanted to get back in a rhythm offensively but that didn’t happen today,” said Parkview coach John Thompson. “Our approaches at the plate weren’t great today and that’s not taking anything away from how Catholic played today.”

Parkview moves to 7-9 in the year while Catholic improves to 15-2.
