Cardinals fall to Missions in series finale



San Antonio, Tx. (OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Springfield fell to San Antonio 11-2 in the Cardinals' last road game before returning to Springfield for the home opener on Thursday.

The Missions jumped in front with four runs in the bottom of the first, featuring a two-run homer by third-baseman Jake Blackwood. After San Antonio added a fifth run in the bottom of the third, Springfield chipped away with a pair in the top of the fourth.  Shortstop Jake Lemmerman led off with a walk and quickly came home on an RBI double by third baseman Ruben Gotay.  Gotay lated darted in from third on an RBI grounder by CF Tommy Pham. 

However, the Missions stretched it back out with a six-run bottom of the eighth, accounting for the 11-2 final score.

Richard Castillo took the loss for Springfield and falls to 0-2 on the season. Dean Kiekhefer was strong in relief for the Cardinals as he threw three scoreless innings and struck out three from the fourth through the sixth innings.

Gotay and first baseman Xavier Scruggs extended their hitting streaks to five games in the loss.
 
Next up the Cardinals have their home opener against the Corpus Christi Hooks at 7:09 p.m. on Thursday at Hammons Field.

Scott McGregor will take the bump for the Cardinals and will be opposed by David Martinez who has a 6.75 ERA on the season.
