Branson knocks off Hillcrest in road victory

Springfield, Mo. (For OzarksSportsZone.com)  -- Opportunities are sometimes few and far between for both Branson and Hillcrest, but the Pirates were able to take advantage of the few chances in the game on Monday night at Hillcrest to defeat the Hornets, 2-1.

Hillcrest (3-17) was able to tally up the first run on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Zac Randolph was hit by the pitch from Branson’s Barrett White with one out.  His courtesy runner was balked to 2nd base and later scored on an RBI single off the bat of Kyle Turner.

Branson was able to plate a couple of runs in their half of the fifth inning.  Four consecutive one out singles by Lake Keller, Ethan Whiteis, Ricky Ward, and White gave Branson the 2-1 lead.

Branson head coach Troy Nimmo discussed how the strong wind was blowing in, which played a factor in the game.

“If you hit anything up in the air it’s going to stay up there all day long,” he said. “You’ve just got to be patient. There were a lot of ugly at bats on our side.”

Hillcrest Head Coach Ryan Schaffitzel echoed Coach Nimmo’s assessment.

“When you get three hits as a team, you’re not going to beat many people. When we got our chances, but we just didn’t execute,” said Schaffitzel.

White pitched a complete game allowing three hits, striking out three, walking one, but hitting four Hornet batters.

Hillcrest pitcher, Tyler Ray, also pitched a complete game, allowing five hits, striking out eight, and walked four.

Both teams play tomorrow and are scheduled to play four games this week.  Branson (6-12) plays Ozark, and Hillcrest will challenge Kickapoo.
