“I think anytime you can jump out to an early lead it gives you an opportunity to kind of set the tone for the rest of the game,” said Bolivar head coach Darin Archer. “I thought that was important that we did that.”
“That was really good that we got off to a fast start,” said senior Peyton Peavey, one of just two seniors on the youthful Lady Liberator roster. “We’ve been struggling with that, so it was good to finish strong and start strong. Everyone had their heads on right and played hard and together.”
Bolivar padded its lead in the second quarter, as Coach Archer regularly substituted five fresh players to keep the pressure on the Lady Wildcats.
“We like to make it a track meet, so no one can keep up,” said Peavey. “Just keep pushing it.”
“I’ve got an awfully deep bench,” said Archer. “We’ve got a lot of girls that are good basketball players, and I want to be able to utilize them, because we’re one injury away from needing those kids to put in big minutes. That’s part of our preparation process is just to make sure that I’ve got 10 or 12 kids that are ready to go.”
Logan-Rogersville also has a youthful bunch, as the Lady Wildcats have just three seniors on their roster. The inexperience has contributed to Rogersville’s disappointing season thus far.
“You got to give them credit,” said Lady Wildcat head coach Keith Spaulding. “They’re an awful good basketball team. They started off well and we started off slow. We’ve had a hard time having five people on the floor at a time focus on what we’re trying to do, and it really showed tonight in the first quarter.”
Bolivar led 35-16 at halftime, and pushed the lead to 50-28 at the end of three. The Lady Liberators had nine players score, and got a good game from floor general Shelby Roberts, who scored nine points and kept the offense flowing.
There was little that Coach Spaulding saw to build on, especially this late in the season.
“It’s getting to the time of the year where we gotta quit building,” said Spaulding. “We gotta have results. To do that, like I said, we gotta have five people out there knowing what we’re trying to do and doing it together and doing it together with passion. And right now, we don’t have that. You gotta give Bolivar credit. They’ve got a great basketball team.”
Coach Archer was equally complimentary of the Lady Wildcats.
“They’ve got a good young team,” he said. “They’re awfully scrappy. The thing I was impressed with, with Coach Spaulding’s kids, they didn’t give up. They played hard for 32 minutes. We knew we were going to be in for a dogfight, so getting that early lead was pretty important.”
Looking ahead, things do not get easier for Bolivar, as Marshfield pays a visit Thursday night. The Lady Liberators will need to protect their home court to remain unbeaten in conference play.
“Obviously, it’s a big conference win, and we always want to protect our home court,” said Archer of the win over Rogersville. “I saw a lot of things we need to continue to improve upon, but yet at the same time, I saw us taking some steps forward. We’re progressing the way I would hope that we would, and hopefully we can keep moving forward.”
Rogersville will host COC Small rival Springfield Catholic Thursday night.
