At 5-foot-8, 175 pounds, Lebanon’s Brock West has quickly shown opposing teams that he’s a small back who can put up big numbers.
The Yellowjackets senior has carried over last season’s breakthrough campaign to 2012, where he already has 12 touchdowns and over 700 rushing yards.
Best of all, Lebanon is 3-0. The Yellowjackets, who are averaging 38 points per game, host Glendale on Friday night.
“We had high expectations coming into this season,” West said. “We’ve all been pretty successful since junior high, all the way up to now. We’ve worked hard in the weight room all summer, and it’s paid off now.”
West was a running back before being moved to wide receiver his sophomore season. When Lebanon starting running back Kayleb Blackywell was injured early last season, West got his chance to return to the backfield.
He delivered, starting the final 8 games and finishing with 1,500 yards on the ground.
“When he went down, I was confident. I knew I could do some things back there. It wasn’t extremely new. I knew I could get it done,” West said.
West said he has his eyes set on the school rushing record (over 1,800 yards), which was set in the early 1990s. West thinks he can hit 2,000 yards before this season is over.
“I don’t see (my size) as anything that should hold me back,” West said. “We’ve got some pretty big guys in the front, so at times I think I can hide behind them.”
West said he’s received some college interest, including schools that want him to play running back. Other schools have pitched the idea of West switching over to the other side of the ball and playing defensive back.
Lebanon coach Will Christian said West, who benches 315 pounds, is comparable to New England Patriots running back Danny Woodhead.
“He’s a dynamic young man,” Christian said. “He’s not huge but he’s extremely explosive. He does a great job of reading blocks. He’s just an outstanding high school running back.”
