Athlete of the Week: Kailey Chapman, Spokane Track

No season is the offseason for Spokane junior Kailey Chapman.

She has broken multiple Spokane school track records as a sprinter and a hurdler. In addition to her prowess on the track, she was an All-Conference and All-District volleyball player along with being a cheerleader.

Despite competing so many times in many different sports and events, Chapman cannot shake the nerves before the gun goes off before a race.

"I get so nervous. I get butterflies," Chapman said. "When I get in to the starting blocks I get a calm feeling and (think) it is go time."

It is not all about sports for Chapman as a member of Spokane's choir.

"In track I get so nervous, but choir is kind of my relaxed competition," Chapman said. "It sill get to compete but it is more for fun."

In choir, Chapman is a part of a group. On the track she doesn't have to worry about anyone covering for her. She is used to taking up for herself as the youngest of five children.

"When I was little my brother's would always wrestle me and beat me up, so maybe that is where I got my competitiveness," Chapman said.

As a junior, Chapman has been to state the last two years and will likely leave a legacy in Spokane for years to come.

"We always use her as an example for the younger kids, the middle school kids particularly, to look up to just like she looked up to the one's ahead of her," Spokane coach said.
