Arkansas looking to hang 15th loss in a row on Southern Miss

Springfield, Mo. (  -- Arkansas struggled a bit with Samford last Saturday in Little Rock before finally putting the Bulldogs away 31-21 with a 14-point fourth quarter.

The game was decidedly different in tone from an opener against Louisiana that featured virtually no adversity for the Razorbacks.

"It was a big learning day," Bielema said. "A lot of things that misfired Saturday weren't physically driven, they were mentally driven."

Now the Razorbacks return to Fayetteville to face a Southern Miss team that has lost 14 games in a row and is in its first year under new coach Todd Monken. Monken brings a throwing attack with him after two years under Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State as offensive coordinator.

Southern Miss is led by senior University of California transfer quarterback Allan Bridgford.

"They have a quarterback that I think does a nice job. He is a one-year wonder. Coming from Cal he has been involved in big games," Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema said.

Southern Miss is fairly one-dimensional with its passing attack as the Golden Eagles rank dead-last in the NCAA in rushing averaging just 42.5 yards per game.

Southern Miss will provide a bit of a different look defensively as they work to contain rushes to the edge.

"Their defensive scheme is a challenge. They are very aggressive in what they do," Bielema said.

Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams should still have plenty of running room though; Southern Miss has given up an average of 179 yards rushing per game so far this season, with ranks 81st in the NCAA.

Even though Arkansas should roll in this game on paper, Bielema still has taken notice of Golden Eagle growth through two games.

"Southern Miss is an 0-2 football team, but you saw a big jump from game one to game two for them,” Bielema said.

Arkansas will kick against Southern Miss at 11:20 a.m. on Saturday in Fayetteville.
